It just occurred to me that I'm probably supposed to assume that the of the devil characters are cis unless suggested otherwise. I hadn't even consciously acknowledged that. I think I just assume any sufficiently weird and autistic woman is transgender

I shouldn't dig at business majors the way I did in that post. I know a lot of highly intelligent people who studied business and do it very well without the help of a shiny new toy that can't even correctly do math

HBCU Students Make Moves with NASA Tech
In September 2023, students at HBCUs participated in a hackathon at the National HBCU Week Conference, where they used NASA’s technologies to create solutions to problems that affect Black communities. The winning team, Team Airtek, proposed a nano-sensor array for medical diagnoses that would give students on HBCU campuses a non-invasive, non-intensive way to test themselves for precursors for diseases and illnesses like diabetes and COVID.
The hackathon they participated in is a modified version of the full NASA Minority University Research and Education Project Innovation and Tech Transfer Idea Competition (MITTIC) that takes place each fall and spring semester at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.
No matter what you’re studying, you can join the MITTIC competition and come up with new and innovative tech to help your community and the world.
MITTIC could be the beginning of your career pathway: Teams can go on exclusive NASA tours and network with industry experts. Show off your entrepreneurial skills and your team could earn money—and bragging rights.
Don’t wait too long to apply or to share with someone who should apply! The deadline for proposals is Oct. 16, 2023. Apply here: https://microgravityuniversity.jsc.nasa.gov/nasamittic.

Context: I'm reading the Dragonriders of Pern series, having recently restarted and then finally finished Dragonsdawn after a long hiatus from the series.
Renegades of Pern is not a very artful book, in terms of realistic decisions, clever dialogue, or compelling narrative. The arguments characters have make little sense, and it frequently feels very expository.
But it is a very functional book, in that it introduces characters, introduces places, and creates a reasonable framework for those characters to explore those places, leading to the rediscovery of ancient knowledge.
I hope All The Weyrs of Pern is better, though.

Two hoaxes about the Japanese government's "International University of Excellence" (Essay)
Tumblr media
Tohoku University
The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology is hyping up the idea of seeking funding and human resources from overseas and operating "International University of Excellence" as an internationally recognized university, because "Japanese universities lack research funds, and untalented Japanese people alone cannot conduct international research."
Both of these arguments are wrong. The reason Japanese universities lack research funds is the work of Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, who himself caused Japan to fall from the ranks of developed countries in the early 2000s. He made universities self-supporting and diverted research funds to unimportant research. He nipped the buds of original research.
Also, it seems that Chinese and Indians are assumed to be international talent, but compared to Japan, where dozens of people have won the three Nobel Prizes in science and the Fields Medal in mathematics, very few (or no) Chinese or Indians have won them. Does this mean that Japanese people are untalented?
There are many Chinese students enrolled at Tohoku University (a model school for an international university of excellence) and the University of Tokyo, but the Chinese, who are only capable of stealing other people's research, are stealing rocket technology and turning it into Chinese-made missiles aimed at Japan, so the Japanese government can be said to be the most foolish of fools. It is also foolish to give 3 million yen in scholarships to Indian students. It should be given to capable Japanese students. The Japanese government is crazy, and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology is no exception.
